Guides
Plain-language guides on the 5/24 rule (often called “Chase 5/24”), quarterly 5% categories, and this quarter's Chase Freedom and Discover it categories.
The 5/24 rule explained
Often called “Chase 5/24”, but not an official Chase rule. It is a rule of thumb reported by cardholders: if you've opened five or more personal credit cards in the past 24 months, some applications tend to be declined. Chase hasn't published the rule, so it comes from experience and reporting, and it can change.
Quarterly 5% categories
Some cards offer a 5% bonus on categories that change every quarter, with a quarterly spending cap. You only earn it after you activate the quarter with your issuer.
